Men and plastic surgery in the UAE

28 September 2018

Man in suit and tieFor a growing number of men in Dubai and other areas of the United Arab Emirates, plastic surgery is the answer to doubts and a lack of self-confidence that is related to their physical appearance.

There is an array of cosmetic surgical procedures available for men, such as a facelift, necklift, a tummy tuck or liposuction to name a few. These procedures are ever-improving, providing plastic surgeons with safer and more effective ways to perform them, and gradual changes in societies modern outlook of plastic surgery now means more and more men are seeking these types of plastic surgery procedures to improve what they feel are their aesthetic flaws.

Male plastic surgery has increased considerably over 10 years

A decade ago men were of course enquiring about cosmetic surgery, but the number of men doing so was nowhere near the figures that are recorded in today's world. Ten years ago, men would typically make a very secretive enquiry while hiding it from their peers. Today, things are very different.

Figures from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reveal that there were a total of 1.3 million cosmetic procedures performed on men during 2017, with abdominoplasty, male breast reduction surgery and liposuction proving to be the most popular procedures. Non-surgical procedures performed on men have also increased a significant amount, with Botox injections (now commonly referred to as 'Brotox') and dermal fillers being the most requested.

Over the past 10 years, many plastic surgeons in Dubai have noticed the increasing number of men showing a real interest in improving their appearance, and the taboo that used to surround the industry is quickly evaporating as people are now embracing the positive effects that can be achieved from an expertly performed cosmetic procedure.

Social media and work pressures

The influence of social media and pressures to do well in their career are thought to be two instrumental reasons for the increase in male plastic surgery, and there is a belief that more emphasis should be placed on fully understanding the reasons for people wanting to choose cosmetic surgery. Many mental health experts state that the relentless posting of selfies on social media platforms can be a sign of low self-esteem and even narcissism, and some are arguing a case for believing cosmetic surgeons should be referring clients to psychologists before agreeing to perform any cosmetic surgery if they sense a deeper underlying issue for their reason to seek out the procedure in the first place.

Due diligence when choosing cosmetic surgeon

Medical tourism is a big contributor to economic growth across the UAE, and patients come here from all over the world to undergo cosmetic procedures. It's vital that men and women who are travelling here for their surgery are educated about the importance of choosing a reputable and experienced cosmetic surgeon. As with any profession, there are plenty of practitioners and surgeons who lack the credentials to safely carry out the procedure to the highest quality. Verify your surgeon or clinic and ensure your experience is perfect the first time of asking.

I make regular working visits to Dubai where I operate out of the Shamma Clinic, and from here I offer a range of cosmetic surgery procedures. If you're keen to discuss the procedure you're interested in, then don't hesitate to get in touch by completing the simple online contact form.
